Homeless Use Social Media

Mark Horvath has an inspirational story for anyone looking to discover ways social media can be profitable.

We met Mark at Blogworld 2010 and caught him for a short interview

Gray Haired Man Mistook for Teenager

Blogworld’s opening night party was held a Liquid, which I assume is a cool club at the new Aria Hotel… but I will never know.

Security henchman outside the club checked ID’s of attendees and when I let them know that I had left mine some miles away in my valeted car, I smiled and asked that they look at my face and hair and guess if I was old enough to get into the club.  Besides, I don’t drink and did not intend to order anything tonight.

CIMG0150 Evidenced by this recent photo, there should be no mistake about my age. There likely is some rule or law involved.. if so, it’s not a helpful one.

I suppose I could take it as a compliment.. looking so young to them.

No loss for me not getting into this club. I may have done a review stating how neato the design was, but instead I’m saying it was a bad experience that left me less impressed with MGM and mega resorts in general.

In the spirit of Blogworld and lessons in social media, I had to post this and add my voice to the idea that we might be trying to hard to secure ourselves and in the process, deny us liberties in the process.

Live Streaming From Blogworld

I set a goal of creating 100 interviews at this year’s Blogworld.

I went to a couple of pre-event parties and started using QIK from my cell phone last night. The camera has outstanding video quality, and for the most part, the sound is pretty good.

From past experience, I know there will be at least 100 blogger that will have a quick tip for other bloggers, authors who want to market a book to best seller (some best selling authors are in also speakers here) and will have other tips and idea from thought leaders in many areas.

I’ll post some here, most will be live on my QIK channel and others will be on blogs I write for. If the technology works, you’ll some right below this paragraph

How Not To Use Video To Sell a Book

It was all coming together nicely.

I’m at Blogworld Expo to get blogger input on what makes for Profitable Social Media and saw a opportunity to make a lot of videos I could share with you here.

Plus, my friend Scott Stratten was holding a pre-Blogworld Tweetup with hundreds of these bloggers celebrating the release of the book and their first night in Vegas.

Here’s how the live broadcast turned out.

The Power of 10

It’s 10/10/10.

A perfect day for reviewing this short film on perspective.

Is Social Media a Game or a $2 Billion Market?

Why would anyone waste time playing a silly game on Facebook?

That’s what the majority of users are saying.

But think for a moment about the small part that does play. By “Small” I mean 75,000,000 users on Farmville.

Facebook now has  team working on  marketing with games, developing ways to make the user experience better. Targeted ads, to be sure.. but also connecting people similar interest

People who use Facebook either tend to tell us that they love playing games or hate them, and we haven’t had the right tools to enable developers to grow their games while at the same time providing a great user experience for non-gamers. We’re building more sophisticated tools that will allow us all to be more successful against those goals.

For game players, here are some improvements we’re excited to be launching today:

  • Full stories in News Feed so they won’t miss when a friend shares an action or needs help in a game. The more active a person is in a game, the more prominent the stories will be.
  • Smarter bookmarks on the home page that will automatically appear and reorder based on the games they’re playing. They will no longer need to individually bookmark apps, and it will be easier to get to favorite apps.
  • A clearer, highlighted number for pending requests or tasks alongside bookmarks.
  • Requests in the Games Dashboard, where they can manage all their game activity and discover new games.

Facebook Developers Page

And best of all.. less announcements to the rest of us that aren’t involved in the game?

How will you include this market in your profitable social media plans?

From “Vancouver Opera Uses QR Codes to Promote New Opera”

This fall Vancouver Opera is kicking off its 51st season with a world-premiere, commissioned opera Lillian Alling. Since this is a brand-new opera, Vancouver Opera needs to do a little more to promote the opera than if we were talking about Traviata (which will be on April-May this season). In addition to the title character tweeting and blogging, Vancouver Opera using QR codes on posters around Vancouver to promote the opera. You scan the code (the one to the right in fact) you go to the Vancouver Opera website, but the codes on the posters will lead you to behind the scenes looks at the making of this tremendous new opera. read more
