It’s not enough to just set up a profile and expect wonderful things to start to happen, as if by magic. Twitter, like life, doesn’t work that way. You need to do the work, and you need to put in the hours.
And the good news?
Most of Twitter can be reduced to one basic requirement: show up. And then keep showing up. Be a presence. Let people know that you’re there, that you’re proactive, that you’re listening, that this isn’t a fad or a phase, and that you’re committed for the long run.
Bottom line? Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Here’s the thing. You don’t have to be on Twitter constantly, obsessing and talking about every little thing. In fact, that’s the worst thing you can do. It’s very much about balance. But that doesn’t mean the opposite is true. In fact, far from it: if you invest nothing into the network I can absolutely guarantee that you are going to get nothing back.
Don’t underestimate the value of being solid and dependable. If I can paraphrase Woody Allen for a moment, I’d say that’s 90% of what it takes to be successful on Twitter.

Well written as usual Warren. You have to be there let your audience know that you’re listening and prepared to add value at anytime.
Well said. My wife was the first person I knew that made a marketing plan for Tweeting almost 5 years ago – and the biggest point was showing up every day and knowing when your readers were most active (so they could be active with you).
Listen and Love… it’s a simple as that
What counts in not so much about what you know as it is about WHO KNOWS YOU.
By showing up consistently, you become noticed and perhaps respected for your consistency. If you also provide value while you are showing up — so much the better! Branding is to a large extent about recognition. This why politicians invest so much of other people’s money in yard signs. Name recognition matters. The old saying, “familiarity breeds contempt” is false — unless, of course, while you were showing up, you were naughty…
Some might take your comment as permission to blast out their name and message “so more will know about it”
I can see you mean “KNOW” like “Get to know” where someone knows you and like you. Which would be quite different then blasts without listening 🙂
People buy from those that the know, like and trust. You can’t get to trust by just broadcasting your name!
well done – great as usual!
Fab post, Warren…
“Twitter, like life, doesn’t work that way. You need to do the work, and you need to put in the hours.”
… is the key sentence!
Great info Warren. I try to do something on twitter everyday, focusing on 15-25 tweets daily, and my audience have steadily climbed.
Good to see you showing up.
When I see you talking the number of tweets/day and the “audience” I am reminded of the best number to be thinking of on Twitter.
That number is ONE. The one person you are engaging in conversation for a tweet.
If you hare getting discussion from each tweet, or counting replies rather than “look at me” tweets, then you know this. 🙂
Great tips… and yes it does take showing up and engagement
Easy, but doing just that puts you ahead of most others 🙂
Great tip… and an easy one to get started with!
